2025 was a really rough year, but I got to play a lot of games at least. I didn’t do the greatest job tracking them, but let’s see what I can piece together :)
I did nearly by far most of my gaming on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 last year. There were some surprise entries on PC though! I’m only gonna name one, and I’m not gonna go into detail on it: Peak. What a fun game. I’m sad that my entire experience with it is tied up in some really bad feelings.
On the Switch this year… let’s pick out my top… ten-ish?:
Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition: I love this game, this is my third playthrough, first two were on the original Wii U release.
Fantasian Neo Dimension: A neat little RPG from Square that has an old-school feel with a unique twist on targeting enemies in combat.
Heretic + Hexen: Boomer shooters, but magic! I think I liked Heretic more as Hexen is very puzzley and mazey and full of backtracking.
Strife: A very story-based, sorta immersive sim? Doom-engine shooter. Pretty neat and fun, kinda short.
UFO 50: Came out on Switch finally and it’s a ton of fun! There’s still so much I have to do in it, I love picking it back up between other games
Milkmaid of the Milky Way: This game is a few years old and I kept bouncing off it for a while, but one night a few months ago I was determined to play it. Classic-style point and click adventure with some fun settings. It’s only like four hours long and relies on some moonshot logic like older Sierra games. Also, I don’t like how the aliens are so heavily based on Indian culture and Indian people? It feels weird. Overall, weird feelings, but kind of an enjoyable bitesize little game that I don’t regret playing.
On Switch 2:
Chibi-Robo: A Gamecube game yes, but it’s available via NSO and it’s really cute and chill! I’ve always wanted to play this but never could get the original disc copy for it.
Pokémon Legends Z-A: I’m a sucker for most Pokémon games, and this one is no exception. I love the Legends series, and I’m so happy they’re finally trying real-time combat! But I miss the strategy and stealth that Legends Arceus required, as well as the more in depth research tasks in the first Legends entry.
System Shock 1 Remake: I’ve never shocked a system before and I’m having a blast with this one. It’s a shame it uses Unreal engine because it hitches a lot and doesn’t run super smooth, much like No Man’s Sky on Switch 2. But it’s still really fun and I love the directionless gameplay that was common in the era.
Kirby Air Riders: lol come on, this has to make the list. It’s so fucking fun, it’s incredibly chaotic, and it beats the pants off of Mario Kart World.
