I have a problem

There’s too many video games.

Since SGDQ prompted me to pick up my n3DSXL again, and since it’s soft-modded, I’ve been able to try out tons of new-to-me games and return to some old ones.

What I’ve picked up again:

  • Final Fantasy 4 (DS)
  • Pictologica Final Fantasy (aka Final Fantasy Picross; 3DS)
  • Parasite fucking Eve (PLAYSTATION 1)
  • Dragon Crystal (Game Gear)

Let’s… take a second and… Parasite Eve. I’m shocked that the New 3DS can emulate this game perfectly. The game renders 1:1 pixel perfect on the screen. I also hear that Xenogears emulates perfectly too, so I just need to get my save for that off of my Vita, which should be really easy. But wait, you might say, the Vita has an official built-in PS1 emulator inside of its PSP emulator! It works great, right..? Actually some games slow down.. and the Vita is kind of ergonomically a nightmare. Further, my LCD has yellowed to hell and back and my left stick is drifty. I can and will try some 3D printed grips for the Vita, for PSP and Vita games that I can’t play anywhere else, — and I can increase joystick deadzone using softmod utilities — but I already have a grip for my 3DS and the design of the 3DS just works better for my hands. I’m just blown away that I can play PS1 games on the 3DS. I keep falling in love with this device.

Also, I just finally need to build that raspberry pi vita dock that converts my Vita into the shortlived Vita TV / Playstation TV set-top box. From there I can just bluetooth my Dualshock 4 to it and bypass the ergonomics issue entirely.

I’ve never played Final Fantasy 8, so I’m thinking that I’ll play that on my 3DS as well. Intriguingly, the SNES version of Final Fantasy 6 emulates better than the GBA one, so there’s that too. That said, I’m not sure why the 3DS can emulate the PS1 super well but struggles with GBA games? Probably because the 3DS can run GBA games natively in hardware, so I bet the motivation just isn’t there to emulate it well. I still prefer to emulate because I like being able to put my games to sleep.

Oh god though I’m in RPG hell right now… These are my currently open RPGs:

  • Baten Kaitos (Switch port of a Gamecube game)
  • Digimon Story Cyber Slueth (Switch)
  • Dragon Crystal (Game Gear on 3DS)
  • Final Fantasy 4 (DS on 3DS)
  • Final Fantasy 6 (SNES on 3DS)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: Grimoire of the Rift (DS)
  • Fantasian Neo Dimension (Switch)
  • Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood (Switch)
  • Breath of Fire 2 (SNES on Switch)
  • Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (Switch port of a PS2 game)
  • Get in the Car Loser (Switch)
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (Switch)
  • Parasite Eve (PS1 on 3DS)
  • Phantasy Star Portable (PSP on Vita)
  • Phantasy Star Zero (DS on 3DS)
  • Pokémon Legends Z-A (Switch 2)
  • Rainbow Skies (Vita)
  • SaGa Frontier Remastered (Switch)
  • Secret of Mana (Switch port co-op with my wife)
  • Super Mariomon (GBA romhack on 3DS)
  • Vagrant Story (PS1 on Vita or 3DS)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X (Switch 2)
  • Xenogears (PS1 on Vita or 3DS)
  • Ys 1 and 2 (PSP on Vita)
  • Ys 8 (Switch)

This doesn’t even consider anything I was playing on my PS4, as I’ve basically retired that system… And there’s so so many more I want to dive into too…

I feel like I need to purchase Donkey Kong Bonanza just to take a break from all these RPGs…

I have a problem.
